Sony MDR ZX110 Review

A detailed look at the dynamic budget headphone under ₹1500 from Sony. It has its pros and cons but will it fit your needs?

The Sony MDR ZX110 is a popular budget headphone that has an expensive look.  Most people often complain that headphones from Sony lack that punchy bass they need. DT-48 was the first dynamic ‘headphone’ in the world and technology has evolved a lot over the years since the DT-48 came out, which was in the late 1930’s.

Like the DT in DT-48 stood for Dynamic Telephone, the MDR in Sony MDR is said to stand for Micro Dynamic Receiver. As such, the MDR 110 comes with Neodymium dynamic drivers, that can deliver precise sound. Well, let’s see if this budget On-ear headphone from Sony can be the right choice for you and why it is still one of the best selling budget headphones in India.

Design Of MDR 110

The MDR 110 is an On-ear headphone that looks a bit expensive to anyone who isn’t crazy about headphones. The plastic material has a matte and some glossy touch. Once you take a closer look, you will understand that this is a budget headphone from the looks. This is because the quality of the plastic is not top-notch and as such, you can’t use it roughly. So, when you play around with it, you will have this inner voice telling you – “I should be careful not to sit or sleep on my headphone”. The thing is that you can’t expect high quality for a headphone in this price range.

The Sony MDR 110 has a very lovely folding mechanism in place called the Swivel Folding Mechanism. The ear cups can be easily twisted and folded flat into the headbands. It is a closed back enfolding headphone in design which very well wraps around your ears and seals the ear cups to your ears to eliminate distractions. If you aren’t sure what a closed back headphone is then let me elaborate on it. Closed back headphones are those that are sealed around the back in such a way that the sound comes out of the headphone to reach only your ears. This means that you won’t hear those background noise easily when hearing music.

The ear pads of MDR 110 is soft-cushioned and feels comfortable to use. The headbands don’t have any cushioning but look neat.

The cables are thick and look as if they can reduce the electrical noise that can occur in cables. The 1.2 m cable has a somewhat flat design above the Y-Splitter, which gives you the feeling that the upper portion of the cable may not be tangle-resistant as the lower part. But this won’t be much of a problem as the quality of the cable is pretty good.

Features Of MDR 110

The unit inside the headphone that converts electrical signals to audio is called the Driver Unit. The Sony MDR ZX 110 comes with a dome-shaped 30 mm driver unit that is capable of delivering a balanced sound. High-energy neodymium magnets assist the driver unit. These are the type of the magnets that are commonly used in high-end headphones and can produce powerful sound.

The swivel folding mechanism that I mentioned earlier can help you save a lot of space, especially if you are a frequent traveller.

The light-weight plastic construction and the soft padding material on the ear cups feel pretty fantastic.

The MDR ZX110AP model comes with an in-line microphone and remote which enables the user to experience hands-free calls while they are listening to music. It is to be noted that the model MDR ZX110 doesn’t have this feature.

Sound Experience

Sony claims that this headphone delivers deep bass, rich mid-levels and soaring highs, and it seems that the mid and low levels are more projected well and has decent bass.

The sound feels very natural and is very balanced in delivering the audio. You may feel that this headphone emphasises bass a bit, but I say that it is set to a decent level. You can’t expect more than that from a headphone this affordable.
